Our Law & Economics Symposium webinar series examines current topics in the life sciences, including issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Amitabh Chandra, who teaches at both Harvard Business School and the Harvard Kennedy School, will join us for a discussion of his recent research on the health consequences of patient cost sharing. Professor Chandra will address some of the implications of his work for insurance design and utilization management, as well as how it may inform matters related to co-pay assistance programs. Analysis Group Managing Principal Noam Kirson will moderate the discussion.

For the fourth installment of our webinar series, David Grabowski, Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, and Analysis Group Vice President Brian Ellman joined us for an informative discussion of the incidence and spread of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities, and the future of COVID-related litigation involving elderly care and government and commercial payers that provide health care coverage to that population. In June, Professor Grabowski testified before the US House Ways and Means Committee about the COVID-19 nursing home crisis. Analysis Group Vice President Maria Garibotti moderated the discussion.

For the third installment of our webinar series, Anupam B. Jena, Ruth L. Newhouse Associate Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, will join us for an informative discussion on the role of the M.D/Ph.D. economist as a consulting and testifying expert. Vice President Stephen Fink will moderate the discussion with Professor Jena, who will share his thoughts on how this unique skill set can help in consulting and testifying roles to define the market or assess class certification issues in antitrust cases, assess commercial success in intellectual property and contract disputes, and work through the determinants of physician decision making in False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Statute litigation matters.

Lo on how to finance expensive treatments. On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, Vice President Laura Comstock moderated a discussion with Professor Lo, who offered his thoughts on financing vaccines and treatments for COVID-19.

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, Managing Principal Noam Kirson moderated the first installment of the Law & Economics Symposium webinar series, “The Value of Pharmaceutical Innovation – What Can We Learn From COVID-19?” It featured a discussion with Professor Craig Garthwaite, who discussed the value of pharmaceutical innovation and outlined lessons that can be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
